Some positive data has been released by Eurostat this week that showed waste production with the EU has reduced by 10 per cent since 2002, with the average person producing 475kg of municipal waste each. The UK came in twelfth out of 28 EU states with 482kg of waste per person.
There has also been an increase in recycling and composting rates rising from 17 per cent in 1999 to 44 per cent in 2014. This is very positive progress for the EU, however additional research shows that the UK is still behind on its waste reduction targets. Data from Defra shows that household recycling dropped last year, with only 44.3 per cent of waste being recycled. There are concerns that the UK will miss the EU target of 50 per cent household recycling by 2020.
So while the numbers are looking good within the EU, the UK still has a lot of work to do. It is time for us all to take responsibility for our waste management and increase our recycling output.
