Now you can enjoy your favourite coffee from Costa Coffee while also doing something good for the planet. Until 21 June 2016, Costa will be donating 10p from every coffee sold in a reusable cup to the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. By remembering to take your reusable cup when you go for your morning caffeine fix you will be helping to reduce the amount of waste produced by single use plastic cups. This simply yet effective step will hopefully increase awareness of the amount of waste produced by coffee cup use and prove that taking your reusable cup is easy!
Costa’s Energy and Environment Manager Oliver Rosevear said, ‘We believe in long-term, meaningful behavioural change and want to encourage our customers to use their reusable cups in Costa stores and support Keep Britain Tidy’s vision of “wasting less and recycling more.’
‘We are delighted to be working with Keep Britain Tidy as part of our wider commitment to help cut down on waste and create a better environment.’
Current recycling rates of coffee cups within the UK is at a terrifying 1 in 1000, largely because of the plastic coating on the cardboard cup that requires specialist recycling techniques. There are very few recycling plants in the UK set up to handle these requirements. Some coffee chains have started promotion ‘100% recyclable cups’ – a false hope, according to Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, as these cups cannot be recycled by regular recycling plants either.
Until more plants can be introduced, it is up to us to take reusable coffee cups to our favourite cafes so we can start reducing the amount of unnecessary waste.
